5 Tips To Prepare For Your Yearly Physical Exam

No matter your age or what your health is like, it is important to schedule a physical exam every year. During this exam, a doctor will check your vitals, including weight, heart rate and blood pressure, and check how your body is performing. Having an annual physical exam is one of the best ways to detect health issues early. Here are some helpful tips to properly prepare for this exam.

Wear Comfortable Clothes

On the day of your physical exam, do not worry about looking fashionable. Comfort is much more important. You will be asked to wear a gown during the exam, so try to wear loose-fitting clothes that are easy to remove.

Write Down the Medications You're Taking

One of the first things your doctor will want to know during your physical exam is what medications you're currently taking. This includes herbal supplements and over-the-counter drugs. If you are taking more than a couple medications, it may be difficult to remember them all off the top of your head. That is why it is a good idea to write down the medications you are taking in a notebook and bring it to your appointment.

Ask If You Need to Fast

While most patients don't have to fast before a physical exam, some do. For example, if you have to take certain labs, your doctor may want you to fast. Find out beforehand what your doctor wants you to do.

Make a List of Your Health Concerns

Have you been experiencing any health concerns since your last physical? If so, you need to tell your doctor about them at your next appointment. Write down the health problems you have been facing in your notebook and include as many details as possible.

Relax

If you feel nervous before every physical exam, you are not alone. However, it is important to realize that an annual exam is important and your doctor is there to help you. To ease your nerves before the appointment, take several deep breaths, meditate, or listen to soft music. If you still feel nervous, ask a close family member or friend to accompany you to the appointment for support.

If you follow these useful tips, you will be properly prepared and get a lot more out of your physical exam. If you ever have any questions for the doctor during the exam, do not hesitate to ask them. For more information, contact a local family medical care clinic.
