2 Symptoms Indicating You Should Take Your Child To A Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic For A Sore Throat
If your child has a sore throat, you may wonder if it is caused by something other than a cold or allergies. While you may have already called to make an appointment with their pediatrician, you may start to feel as though your child needs to be seen sooner. If so, think about whether your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms along with their sore throat.
1. White Patches Appear on Their Throat
When your child has a sore throat, one of the first things you should do is have them open their mouth as wide as possible and shine a small flashlight to illuminate the back of their throat. Usually, when their throat is irritated by a cold, mucus, or allergies, you will see that their throat is red.
However, if you see that there are white patches forming on the sides near the tonsils, these could mean that your child has strep throat. Since strep throat will not go away on its own and needs antibiotics for treatment, you need to have them seen as soon as possible. The doctor can take a simple swab to determine whether or not they have a bacterial infection.
2. Lymph Nodes in Their Neck Are Swollen
Another symptom to look for when trying to decide whether your child needs urgent care for their sore throat is swollen lymph nodes, especially if they also have a high fever. You can check the lymph nodes in their neck by lightly placing your fingers on either side of their neck.
If you feel lumps on either side, these are their lymph nodes. Swollen lymph nodes are usually a sign that your child's body is trying to fight off inflammation or infection. The swelling could be caused by strep throat, tonsillitis, or other types of infection.
When your child's lymph nodes are swollen, you need to have a doctor determine the underlying cause of the symptom. The sooner the pediatrician can find the infection or source of inflammation, the sooner treatment can begin.
Even if your child is not exhibiting any of the above symptoms with their sore throat, you may still have a gut feeling that they should be seen by a pediatrician as soon as possible. If it is the weekend or will be a few days before they can see their doctor, take your child to a pediatric urgent care clinic so that a diagnosis can be made and treatment can begin sooner than later.
